How to run a golf tournament

Whether it's a member-guest, a club championship, a charity scramble or a buddies' golf trip, every golf event comes down to the same steps. Here they are, in order — and how to manage them in one place.

The kinds of golf events

  • Member-Guest

Two-person teams, flights and round-robin matches over two or three days, often with a Calcutta and a shootout.

  • Club Championship

Stroke play over two to four rounds, gross for the title and net flights for everyone else.

  • Charity tournament

Usually a one-day scramble, with sponsors, prizes and a shotgun start.

  • Golf trip

A group traveling to play several courses over a few days, with teams and games each day.

  • Weekly game

The same group most weeks — a tee sheet, sign-ups and the day's game.

  • Invitational / shootout

A one-day field with a format and a winner at the end of the day.

How to organize a golf tournament, step by step

  1. Pick the format

Stroke play, match play, a scramble or best ball — and whether it's individual or teams, gross, net or both.

  2. Set the date, course and holes

Book the course and know how many holes you have: an 18-hole course, a 27-hole club's three nines, or several courses on a trip.

  3. Decide how players get in

First come, first served; a sign-up date; line-up day; a lottery; invitation only; or last year's teams first.

  4. Build the field and the flights

Collect the players and their handicaps, pair the teams and split them into fair flights.

  5. Plan the tee times

Shotgun or tee times, one wave or two, with room for lunch, the awards — or a shootout.

  6. Set the prizes and side games

Flight prizes, skins, closest to the pin, a Calcutta — decide how each pays before anyone tees off.

  7. Score it live

Give every group a way to keep score on a phone so the leaderboard is right the moment the last putt drops.

  8. Post the results and settle up

Publish the standings and pay out the prizes and the Calcutta.

Managing it all in one place

Tangent was built for exactly these steps: one event holds the sign-ups, the field, the flights, the tee times, live scoring on every phone, the Calcutta and the results — with a public event page your players and their families can follow. Questions

How far ahead should you plan a golf tournament?
Book the course first — two to six months ahead for a one-day event, longer for a member-guest or a trip — then open sign-ups once the date and format are set.
What is the easiest format for a golf tournament?
A scramble: every player in a team hits, the team plays its best shot, and one card per team keeps it quick and friendly for all abilities.
How do you split a field into flights?
Sort the players or teams by handicap (for teams, the players' indexes added together) and cut them into flights of similar size, low handicaps first.
How do you keep score live at a golf tournament?
Give each group a phone scorecard from a link or QR code; the leaderboard updates as each hole is entered.
What is a Calcutta in golf?
An auction pool run alongside the event: teams are auctioned, the winning bids form a pot, and the pot pays whoever bought the teams that finish well.
